I told myself, “Next time I see him, I’ma have something for him.” This jacket is called Original Man. It’s a reminder to our people that we are the first. We are the original man. We are Black. When he asked me to create something that represented the Baby Boomer generation, I didn’t just think about a time period—I thought about a purpose. I saw the work he put in. The lives he impacted. And I merged that with the voices of revolutionaries who also used education as a battleground: Angela Davis. Fred Hampton. James Baldwin. They didn’t just fight—they taught. They didn’t just resist—they educated. They reminded us that knowledge is power, and the classroom is sacred ground. This jacket took time. There were trials, switches, second-guesses, and breakthroughs. But that’s the process of legacy work. Now it’s complete—every stitch placed with meaning. This is for the Boomers who didn’t just live through the movement— they moved us forward.
